Is It Really Odd To Keep Losing Weight Without Dieting?

I am neither dieting nor exercising. I am still eating, but for some unknown reason I am losing weight. In December 2007, I was 180. Now, I dropped below 170 once this week already. I am 5′ 6″.
I am experiencing a lot of job-related anxiety between work and looking for work, but I *always* have some kind of anxiety — so it may not be a factor.

    Weight loss – unintentional
    Causes
    * AIDS
    * Cancer
    * Depression
    * Diarrhea that is chronic (lasts a long time)
    * Drugs, including amphetamines, chemotherapeutic agents, laxative abuse, and thyroid medications
    * Drug abuse
    * Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa and bulimia
    * Hyperthyroidism
    * Infection
    * Loss of appetite
    * Malnutrition
    * Manipulative behavior (in children)
    * Painful mouth sores, mouth braces, or a loss of teeth that prevent you from eating normally
    * Smoking
    * Pancreatitis
    * Lack of blood supply to the bowel
    * Diabetes
    You should call your health care provider if you have lost more than 5% of your normal body weight over 6 – 12 months, or less, and it cannot be unexplained
    Whoever gave me thumbs down for having AIDS on the list is an idiot, That list was copied directly from a Government medical site, see link.

    no, the real term of diet means what you eat. Since u are growing it could just be your metabolism growing and getting faster. It also could be you are not noticing you are eating new foods that do it. If you think that is necessary go to a doctor and get it checked out. Also it could be of you getting taller, you lose weight when you grow.

    You might just have a really high metabolism? Also, even though you’re not consciously dieting, your higher than normal anxiety levels may lead you to unintentionally reducing your caloric intake. Just try to keep an eye on how many calories per day you consume and if it’s a normal amount, you might want to see a doctor eventually.

    If you’re feeling okay, I wouldn’t worry about it. There are some serious health problems such as diabetes and brain tumors which cause a loss in weight without changes in eating, but if you’re feeling okay then you should be fine. Maybe see a doctor if you’re having a lot of headaches or anything like that.

    First of all, you have to take into consideration any health problems that might be possible. People are suggesting things (aids, depression, diabetes) but none of them will apply to you if you live a lifestyle that does not promote these things.
    Secondly, look at your social situation. Has anything in your life changed drastically? For instance, you said that you always have a certain amount of stress in your life, but it seems that looking for a job has added to that stress. Personally, i lose weight when i stress because i usually forget to eat, or i am just not hungry.
    You dont have to see a specialist (especially if you cant afford it, like me! ) just take a moment to step back and take a mental inventory of the changes that have happened in your life within these past few months. You may be able to pinpoint the problem sooner than you think.

    It depends a lot on the amount of calories you are consuming per day and the amount you are burning off. Even if you are not consciously dieting you may indeed be consuming fewer net calories than before.

    depends on how old you are while going though puberty i lost 25 pounds

    10 lbs in 2 months is not really something that I would let worry me. If you see a significant decrease in weight ie.( 5 lbs. in a week), you should definitely see your MD to get blood tests done, because it could be something as simple as an iron deficiency or your thyroid.

  23. Msbearr on July 2nd, 2009 at 9:37 am

    When some people are stressed out will gain weight. Whereas others will lose it. You may be the type to loose it while under anxiety and stress. IF you keep loosing more then 10 lbs a week and you are still eating at least three meals a day then you will need to see your doctor due to the fact it could be something else. What? It could have something to do with your thyroid.
    In my case I was loosing about 8 to 10lbs a week and still eating three meals a day and mine was irritable bowel syndrome.
    Let’s not jump the gun here I think yours might be due to stress.
    I hope this helps.

    It may or may not be odd. Some people with anxiety and stress, fidget. Fidgetting will cause you to burn more calories because you are constantly moving. You may need to look at your diet too. Sometimes what you eat can cause you to lose weight. The more whole grains, lean meats, fruits, and vegetables that are consumed will add bulk to your stool and give your body less time to absorb fats. Drinking 24 oz of milk a day can help you lose weight because of the increase in calcium.
    On the other hand, you may have a metabolic problem. Things such as hyperthyroidism can cause an abnormally increased metabolism. If you are concerned about the amount of weight you are losing, you should probably go see your family doctor.
